《历史的观念》一书是科伦伍德死后由其学生根据其讲稿、演说整理而成，该书全面系统地阐述了历史观的发展和他本人的历史哲学观，阐述一切历史都是思想的历史的观点，他认为历史不是抄袭史料，而是做出自己的结论；重要的不是它的真伪，而是它的意义。作为代表作，其历史哲学观是对传统思辨历史哲学的反叛。他所强调的史学研究中的主动性和批判精神在今天仍具有借鉴意义。
